In 1900 Julius Fridlender of England, a technologist, was invited to St. Petersburg to set up an oil paint factory here.
In 1934 upon the initiative of Tretyakov Gallery staff the factory was turned into the first of its kind in the USSR, Leningrad Artistic Paints Plant.
The products of the enterprise are used for most responsible projects, including restoration of most precious pieces of art and architectural landmarks, such as St. Basil Cathedral, Grand Kremlin Palace, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, artwork from the collections of the State Hermitage, the State Tretyakov Gallery, and old Russian icons.
“St.Petersburg Paints” has been an active participant in the largest international exhibition of artwork commodities in Frankfurt-am-Maine, Germany.
The enterprise is a recognized leader of the market of artistic materials in Russia, CIS countries, and Baltic states. Several generations of artists in these countries have used the products of the enterprise, as did artists in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. The geography of export is extended every year.
After disintegration of the Soviet Union the factory has been named “St-Petersburg. Nevskaya Palitra”.
